Although Barcelona was transformed by the renovation and construction projects undertaken in preparation for the 1992 Summer Olympics, the city maintained its cosmopolitan but friendly personality than has enchanced visitors for more than one thousand years.

Mayor Pasqual maragall gave the inaugural address at the Opening Ceremony by offerings a welcome in the four official languages of the 1992 Summer Olympics: Catalan, Spanish, English, and French.
